This week I went to the L to the 5th at their recent movie premiere of That’s My Boy. I went in with low expectations, after all it is an Adam Sandler movie and lately he’s had trouble creating new and interesting characters. But I have to say I was pleasantly mistaken. With a little fine-tuning, little more effort and a different voice this could have been one of Sandlers Best.
Plot
The movie follows the story of Donny (Adam Sandler) living out everyone young boy’s fantasy of sexual relationships with their hot teachers, but this fantasies results in a child and after receiving full custody at the age of 18 this isn’t really the model father one should be. Once his son Han Solo, yes that is his name Donny gives him, turns 18 he leaves his old life behind to make a name for himself, Todd Peterson (Any Samberg). After many years pass Donny being the low life he is about to go to jail for Tax evasion unless he can come up with the money to pay. He comes up with a plan to have a reunion TV Special with Him, His son and the Teacher. The only problem is it’s the day before Todds wedding to a beautiful bride. When Donny show up unannounced to the luxurious beach home of Todd’s boss and his future in-laws, Todd now has to try and keep his safe and stable life from crashing all around.
Overview
The first thing you’ll notice is that Donny’s character sounds and acts like all his other characters. His voice is a mixture of Little Nicky and Billy Madison. And the setup of this story doesn’t really make you care about this character and his problems. The same goes for Todd’s character. The setup of Todd and his awkward loser lifestyle doesn’t really make you feel sorry the guy, which is a shame being this is Samberg’s break through role. The movie really doesn’t take traction until Sandler and Samberg finally meet and have to survive the week with each other now that the family falls in love with Donnyand invite him to stay. Of course you’ll have all the sex jokes and crazy archetypes that Sandler is known for exploiting throughout the movie, some even go on a little too much but the whole cast and crew is there. A couple of surprises were the inclusion of Milo Ventimiglia, mostly known for his role of Peter Petrelli on NBC’s Heroes and also a big presence of Vanilla Ice as himself. I enjoyed Ventimiglia’s performance on Heroes and it was great to see him again on screen. He plays the psycho dumb muscle-building brother of the bride and plays it off well without going to over the top. Some of the best acting I feel came from Ventimiglia. Perhaps my favorite thing about he movie would be Vanilla Ice. He has a big presence in the movie and has I think some of the funniest dialogue and scenes. It was welcoming to see him on set. Conclusion
The movie has a good heart behind its raunchy humor and slapstick comedy. It wraps up with a feel good ending that you really feel needed to happen and pays off from having to sit through the movie feeling like needing to slap some sense to everyone in the movie. I went into this expecting another Jack and Jill but what you get is an equivalent of Click. It wasn’t a great movie but not a bad one either. It did have me laughing out loud more often than I thought I would and seeing the chemistry between Samberg and Sandler was nice to see. Again I want to thank L to the 5thfor putting these midnight movie premieres and hit them up on Facebook for other events.
I give this movie 3 WAZZUPs out of 5.
