The Amazing Spider-Man

I have been looking forward to the movie since it was first time i finished watching Sam Raimi’s horrible Spider-Man 3. Although this film looked to be everything we wanted from a new reboot of the Spider-Man franchise my excitement was always held back because of the short time between the first Spider-Man movie and this reboot. But hey it worked for X-Men right? Well I joined L to the 5th once again and attended their midnight screening of The Amazing Spider-Man and let me tell you Marc Webb (Director or 500 Days of Summer) did a great job at his first run at the web head’s franchise and hit some really key points the original trilogy missed, but Webb also has a few misses as well.

Cons

Let’s start with what I didn’t like about the movie, the pacing. The action scenes were great and web swinging looked cool but in-between these high action scenes there were long drawn out scenes of dialogue and plot building. The dialogue wasn’t the problem or the acting so much the length of each scene, Webb could have tighten up these scenes to keep the attention of the audience. I would start to loose interest in the scene because it would take too long to get the point of the dialogue, especially coming right from a high dramatic or action scene.

Now I know Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man revolutionized the camera work with the spider cam and it’s tough to try and improve on what already looked amazing, but I would have been okay without the first person POV cam and the Ultra Super Slow-Mo. The first person POV cam wasn’t terrible but it was underutilized there were only 2 points in the movie it really stood out to me and both times it drew me out of the movie because it wasn’t apparent throughout. Ultimately it seemed just a gimmick to take advantage of the 3D. Same went for the Ultra Slow-Mo it wasn’t used enough to make it feel like part of the movie. The last shot is an Ultra Slow-Mo that pretty much comes to an end. The last frame of the movie might as well have been a screenshot.

Pros

I will have to say thought that this Peter Parker/ Spider-Man is way better than the Toby McGuire one. People forget that Peter Parker is a high school student and you really get that feeling of awkwardness and teenage angst with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone doing equally justice to her character they complement each other well. Garfield really puts his full effort into making his version of Spider-Man what we expect from the comics. His quick sarcastic remarks and the cheesy one liners, it’s all there.

This Spider-Man is a joy to watch and not to mention extremely agile. Spider-Man utilized all his new abilities to the fullest. You see some parkour in Spider-Man’s movements and the use of the web shooters was my favorite part of the movie. No longer were they just used to swing and pull objects but also used the vibrations of the webs to find the lizard’s hideout, gag criminal’s mouths, patch up a wound, and finally web zipping out of danger. There was even a point in the movie where you see Spider-Man crawling like a spider all around the Lizard wrapping him up in a web which looked really cool.

Conclusion

I won’t say this movie was Amazing but it was a good summer movie and a must see for any Spidey Fan. It’s not a bad movie either but I feel like it’s a good stepping stone to setup the sequel especially since we really don’t get an answer to the connection Peter has in all this Cross Species Genetics. Once that sequel is announced that is when the Webb will let loose and truly amaze us.

I give The Amazing Spider-Man 4 Web Shooters out of 5.

Call me a geek, nerd, gamer, whatever you want! I’m just passionate about tech and video games. I’m always on the look out for the latest Game and Tech news, even when I was younger and my parents wouldn’t allow video games in the house I would find a way to play the latest games. Be it by my friends or at the Arcade, remember those? I graduated from CSU Monterey Bay with a BA in Video Editing and am an avid gamer. Some of my favorite games of all time are Mega Man X, Ocarina of time, and Mass Effect. Although I play a lot of games I still find time to have a full time job and go outside. On my free time I enjoy hitting the gym and running, Soccer has to be my favorite sport to play while Football being my favorite sport to watch. Although I’ll be getting married this spring gaming has to be my second marriage.
